Team Cherry has officially announced the release date of Hollow Knight: Silksong, perhaps the most anticipated indie game ever, as September 4. The game costs $20 and is available on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, as well as Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
September 4, Silksong was hyped so much that several purchasing platforms buckled due to the number of buyers. The next day there were over 535,000 people who bought Silksong just on Steam alone.
“The game is amazing,” said senior Austin Waddell, “I have no sense of direction ready to explore new places, and it starts out harder than [predecessor] Hollow Knight.”
The Silksong announcement has taken aback many other indie developers who planned releases around this time. Rather than deal with the competition, they moved their own games' release dates later as if they are avoiding a busy month such as October and December, avoiding Silksong’s massive publicity.
Games such as Demonschool, Aeterna, baby steps, Little witch in the woods, clover pit, Megabonk, and Faeland all pushed back their release dates so as not to compete with the Silksong hype.
The original Silksong announcement trailer was released in 2019, and in the six years between then and now, fans had to find something else to do: daily Silksong updates, Silksong timelines, and espionage Team Cherry progress. The main reason for all the delays is because Team Cherry could not stop adding on to the game—which is a much better problem than delays because of bugs or funding issues.
For those who do not play indie games or have not experienced the pain of waiting for Silksong: indie games tend to be more expensive in creativity, usually exploring new art styles and gameplay mechanics compared to major mainstream game titles, and Silksong is the long expected counterpart of the 2-D metroidvania classical: Hollow Knight.
Released February 24, 2017, Hollow Knight is a fantasy featuring insectoid creatures that are succumbing to a plague of light. Exploring as a creature of shadow, the knight journeys underground through fallen cities, overgrown architecture, infested depths, and much more witnessing each region’s hidden lore. Travel through distant dreams, fight in a colosseum of fools, and acquire charms to assist your knight.
Having around 150 unique enemies, Hollow Knight has a ton of enemies for an indie game, but Silksong surpasses this with over 200 entirely new creatures, making it bigger than its predecessor. In Silksong, you play as Hornet, a featured boss and NPC in Hollow Knight, whose weapon (going off of the miniature fantasy) is a needle.
