The golf teams are swinging into winning seasons!
The boys’ golf team has ended their season on a high, finishing with an impressive record of 9-3. These wins come against tough section opponents like Ellwood City, Central Valley, and Ambridge.
Many of these matches were held at the Bobcats home course, Seven Oaks Golf Course. The Seven Oaks Golf Course and Country Club provides both the boys and girls teams with a practice course and also helps with some of the equipment needed by the team members.
September 15, the boys’ team honored their seniors in a playoff qualifying match against Avonworth. The team had five senior golfers this season: James Sample, Dom Cerilli, Pacer Hill, Carson Cuddy, and Christian Snowden.
The match ended in a close score, but sadly Avonworth came out on top.
“We battled through some tough matches, but Avonworth was just better,” junior Trevor Schmidt said about the loss.
In addition to the impressive regular season, many individual male golfers were able to qualify and compete in the WPIAL Individual Qualifiers. These golfers competing were juniors Schmidt and Nicholas Krzeczowski, Cuddy and Hill, and freshmen Derek Hughes and Jake Peluso.
Schmidt said about the season, “We lost some must-win matches but we had some good moments as well.”
This year was the first season that Beaver Area was able to field a full girls’ golf team. The team consists of seven members, with mostly underclassmen. The team's first official match took place August 24 at the Bobcat’s home course against Plum.
The Bobcat’s came away from the match with a win and were quickly looking ahead to competing once again against Plum.
After the Bobcats’ first two section matches, their schedule was quickly plagued by postponements and cancellations. Matches scheduled for September 5, September 13, and September 18 were all postponed and scheduled for a later date. This roadblock didn’t stop the Cats for very long as they soon were taking on MAC Championships.
The MAC Golf Championships took place September 7. The match took place at a new course for the team, Fox Run Golf Course in Beaver Falls, PA. After competing against individuals from Blackhawk, Central Valley, and many other local school districts, sophomore Jill Dinsmore finished 14, and sophomore Ava Mrkonja finished 15.
Following MACs, the girls continued their dominance across the section. September 11, the team took on Ambridge, once again at Fox Run Golf Course. At this match, the team beat Ambridge 199-230.
This victory was significant as it was the first match this season that the team was able to break 200. Dinsmore medaled at the match with a score of 45 with freshman Alaina Cerelli coming in close second with a score of 48.
The next dual match took place September 14 once again on the Cats’ home course. Trinity proved to be no competition to the team as Beaver Area easily defeated them 213-258. Dinsmore was once again medalist.
September 19 was a busy day for the Bobcats as Dinsmore competed at WPIAL Individual Qualifiers while the rest of the team held a dual match against Ellwood. At WPIAL Individual Qualifiers, Dinsmore placed 12 with a score of 108.
At the dual match, the Bobcats improved to 4-2 as they took down Ellwood. Freshmen Catherine Kredel and Charlotte Liller both shot new personal bests against Ellwood at 63 and 50 respectively.
Continuing their winning trend, the Bobcats next match took place September 21 in a dual match against Blackhawk and Sewickley Academy. The Bobcats once again came away with the win, improving their record to 6-2. Dinsmore was once again medalist.
The most recent match took place September 25 against rival Blackhawk, this time at home. The match finished in a tie with Dinsmore once again being medalist. Celebrations were not cut short by the tie, however, as the Bobcats honored their only senior Madison Latchaw that night.
The girls season is coming to an end with only three matches left and only one at home. These next matches are against South Fayette twice and one final match against Trinity. Check the next edition of the ECHO for results of these matches and postseason play!
