For whatever reason, we all seem to be staying inside a lot more these days. Weird.
Well, no matter the reason, everyone's working through their backlog of everything that they haven’t gotten around to watching, listening to, or playing, so we at the ECHO hope you don’t mind if we add a few more items to your list. With that in mind, here's a great show, movie, and game for your lengthy stay at home.
If for some reason you happen to be in the market for a movie that makes you acutely aware of how bored and lonely it is being stuck in a house, The Lighthouse is one you should be watching. Starring Green Goblin Willem Dafoe and Twilight vampire Robert Pattinson, the film dares to ask the question "How boring would it be to both live in the 1800s and also take care of a lighthouse?" The answer: pretty darn boring. I can’t recommend it enough for the simple fact of how lovely it is to hear Dafoe speak like a pirate throughout the movie and sing sea chanties with Pattinson.
The Lighthouse is available to stream on Amazon Video.
Since I didn’t have the decency to recommend our readers a book, I may as well still recommend something you have to read. Babylon Berlin is a German television series about detective (and only man capable of pulling off a fedora) Gereon Rath as he investigates the various shady underbellies of Berlin right before the Great Depression. This show truly has something for everyone, with pretentious symbolism and tense action, all the way to a literal musical number in the very second episode (and some mature content, so don’t watch it with your little sister—hey, it’s German television; they’re more relaxed about that stuff than we are). Clearly, this show will keep you entertained through many boring weeks at home. Or just one day if you watch it all at once.
Babylon Berlin is available to stream on Netflix.
Speaking of having to read dialogue in a language you can’t understand, Animal Crossing: New Horizons allows you to grow a deserted island into a small village filled with mostly adorable animal neighbors and remind yourself what social interaction with people who aren’t your family is like. The best part is that the game is impossible to win; there is no grand goal in Animal Crossing other than to make your town as nice looking as possible. A relaxing game for times that are incredibly not relaxing.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available for digital purchase on Nintendo Switch.
