In their first year at Beaver Area, the Best Buddies program is seeking to create friendships and meaningful experiences for those with challenges.
Developed by senior Emily Young and sponsored by BAHS faculty members Ms. Ryleigh Baur, Ms. Katie Devlin, Mrs. Laurie Abel, and Mrs. Erin Bechdel, the Best Buddies program has held a variety of events—such as planting flowers in the school garden, hosting a special night at the homecoming football game, and trick or treating in the school building on Halloween night.
Their next initiative is establishing a care closet on the annual high school Day of Giving November 23.
“It may not seem like it, but there are those around us who lack resources, and we are holding a drive for gently used clothing, toiletries, and supplies to create a stash at the library that students can use and take as needed,” explained Ms. Devlin.
Though the day of giving is November 23, the Best Buddies program is currently looking for donations to kick-start the closet. Donations can be dropped off at the high school office.
Just one of the charitable events, the program plans to host many more in the future. You can contact any of the above mentioned faculty members with questions.
