It’s a rebuilding year for the Beaver Area boys basketball team. In every game they improve a new aspect of their playing style. Their new coach Greg Cercone is getting a feel for the program, and everything is beginning to fall into place.
Now if they could just notch that first ‘W.’
December 18 the team took on the Quaker Valley Quakers in a tough match-up falling 58-45. The game got a little rowdy towards the middle of the fourth quarter, but the team regained composure and was contained throughout the rest of the game.
“We didn’t want to start anything, we just wanted to focus on playing hard the whole game,” said senior Peter Kazas.
Over the weekend of December 28 the team participated in the Moon tournament. They took on the Moon Tigers Friday, a rough match-up, because Moon is in a higher division than Beaver. The boys played a strong game; unfortunately, they lost 50-41.
Saturday the boys took on Propel, a Pittsburgh charter school, but lost 58-31—a discouraging loss. After this game the coach was visibly discouraged by the way the game was being played, and he felt his team could have performed at a higher level.
“We played a good team in Moon. We have to learn how to finish out games,” said senior Mike Champ.
Despite the losses, the Bobcats are hanging in there. None of the losses have been blow-outs—and putting as many points on the board as they did against powerful teams like Moon and QV shows promise.
The team hopes for a win against New Castle Tuesday January 8 at Beaver Area High School. Here’s hoping they net that ‘W.’
