No, you’re not imagining things. There are students dancing in the hallways, and TikTok is to blame.
The app TikTok, once known as Musical.ly, has become quite popular. TikTok is owned by a Chinese company called ByteDance who purchased the app Musical.ly for $1 billion in August 2018.
Just like in the original app Musical.ly, users lip sync to various sounds and songs ranging from “Say My Name” from the Beetlejuice musical, to “Gordon Ramsay” by HL Wave, all the way to user-created sounds and noises, or perform little skits and stunts.
Videos range from 15 seconds to a minute in length.
According to market research firm Sensor Tower, TikTok was the third most downloaded app this year with 188 million new users. Sensor Tower also found 41 percent of users to be between the ages 16 to 24. This means out of TikTok’s 800 million worldwide users, 328 million are young adults and teenagers.
So why is TikTok so popular among teens?
TikTok allows teens to express themselves in creative ways, and many teens download the app just to pass time when they’re bored—plus, there’s a chance you’ll become “TikTok famous” like popular posters Loren Gray who has 35.4 million followers or Zach King who has 25.3 million followers.
“I often scroll through the app during study halls when I’m bored. Some of the videos are interesting,” freshman Abby Dawson said.
Many teens love the creativity showcased on the app, but inevitably, some hate it.
One of the biggest criticisms of the videos is that they’re all the same. Too many posts are just people imitating other posts.
“I think people waste too much time on the app; the videos aren’t even funny to me,” junior Jaden Emerick commented.
