Buckle up because the nerds are on TV!
Annually, three members of the Academic Games Club were chosen to compete in the KDKA Hometown High Q game show competition.
This year juniors Ian McCarty-Cogis and Gracie Turyan as well as sophomore and team captain Ava Sutter were chosen to represent Beaver Area.
Episodes of High Q previously were recorded at the KDKA TV studio in Pittsburgh, but thanks to Covid since 2020 episodes are recorded through Zoom.
The team members assembled in the library after school November 9 and met with Mr. Ray Petelin, a reporter from KDKA, who acted as the game show host.
Turyan stated, “It was a unique experience and it will be cool to see the team on TV [when the program airs].”
The Bobcats competed against the Riverview Raiders and the Springdale Bulldogs.
A High Q competition involves multiple rounds of questions in different categories. Category examples might include words that start with P, science, or hometown history.
In certain rounds teams lose points for wrong answers while during other rounds there is no penalty.
There is only one timed round where participants must answer ten questions in 45 seconds.
The Bobcats ended up scoring 310 points earning second place.
“We did a lot better than I originally thought we would,” admitted McCarty-Cogis.
Riverview won the competition with a 390 while Springdale lost with only a 280.
Beaver Area’s Hometown High Q episode was broadcast November 27 at 12:30 p.m. on KDKA.
Beaver Area High Q is sponsored by Academic Games, gifted, and High Q coach Mrs. Kelly McNeil-Korba.
