The new school year always brings new faces. Yes, there are new freshmen and other new students who join the school, but also new teachers and staff. Ms. Kaitlin Devlin is a new special education teacher this year! Let’s make her feel welcome and don’t be afraid to say “Hello!” if you pass her in the halls.
Where did you go to high school?
I went to high school at Upper Saint Clair in the South Hills of Pittsburgh.
Did where you grow up have an impact on your occupation choice?
I don’t believe so. I know I was really lucky in that my parents supported my goals and allowed me to study whatever I wanted in college. I was able to explore my interests and am really really grateful for that.
Where did you go to college?
I received my undergraduate degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I majored in history, not teaching! Then, I went back and attended Waynesburg University to get my teaching certificate and get a master of arts in teaching degree.
How long have you been doing this particular job?
I cannot believe it, but I’ve been teaching for 8 years! Before coming to Beaver Area I worked at a cyber school.
Is this job what you have always wanted to do or did your “path” change and lead you to this new occupation?
I actually never thought I was going to be a teacher at first. I went to school to study archaeology because I always loved history. After going on an archaeological dig in the Middle East, I realized that I actually hated it! My favorite part was helping people and spending time with kids. That led me to go back to school to be a teacher!
What is something you want your new students to know about you?
I would like my students to know I love to be outside. Hiking, biking and paddle boarding are some of my favorite things!
What is your favorite part about your job?
My favorite part about my job is getting to help people and see the effect. It’s so awesome to see students achieve their goals!
What is your biggest strength that will help your students at Beaver Area High School?
For me, I think it’s that I really care and want to see them succeed. If you need help, I’m here for you. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll help you find the person who does.
What is the most satisfying part of your job?
The most satisfying part of my job is seeing my students progress and achieve their goals in their classes. It’s also awesome to see my students being successful in life and forming a plan to continue that success after graduation.
If you could teach another subject what would it be?
I’m certified to be a special education teacher and also a history teacher, so I get to do a lot of stuff to begin with. However, if I could draw I would LOVE to teach art! I loved sculpture class in high school.
Who was/is your biggest inspiration?
I remember my 11th grade history teacher really well: Mr. Durkin. He taught me that it’s fine to be weird and love certain parts of history and what makes the past so unique and fun. He was really quirky and always made the class laugh, which I loved as a high school student. Also, my Mom is really important to me. She’s been with me through the ups and downs of life and is always my biggest supporter.
What is one thing you wish your students would take away from you and remember for life.
I hope my students will see that there will always be someone in their corner. I’m here to cheer them on and help them be successful. Sometimes, even the smallest of victories can deserve a celebration!
