The lady Bobcats shot their last WPIAL playoff baskets.
February 23 the girls basketball team traveled to Hampton to take on the Shadyside Wildcats. The game started out well.
The teams were evenly matched scoring nearly an equal number of baskets throughout the first quarter.
Unfortunately, the third quarter came and the game started to wind down. The Bobcats only scored 8 points while the Wildcats scored 18—all off of three-pointers.
In the end the girls worked hard but were unable to make enough shots to regain the lead. The game ended with a score of 57-49.
Sophomore Emma Pavelek sadly remarked, “We just couldn’t make enough 3’s, and we didn’t have enough time to finish it out.”
Top scorers for this game were Pavelek and freshman Payton List both with 16 points each. Next was senior Quamile Monterio and sophomore Maddi Weiland with 6 points each followed by sophomores Anna Blum with 2 points and Natalie Priest with 3 points.
“Our team played with every skill we had; we played through all the diversity of the game. I’m proud of every girl who stepped on the court and every player on the team. That game showed character and heart,” said Monterio.
Although this was a tough loss for the girls that closed their WPIAL run they are fortunately able to enter the state competition! Skipping over WPIALs, the girls will play in the first round of states hoping to go for the trophy. At the time of writing, the date and opponent were still unknown; check the next issue for information.
Head coach Greg Huston said after the Shadyside loss, “It was a good regular season and I’m really proud of the entire team for their effort and teamwork. We laid a nice foundation for the future, and we think the coming years will be even better than this one.”
