The high school concert band and chorus department came together December 20 for a winter concert, which is also each ensemble's first concert of the school year.
Each of the ensembles performed a variety of pieces, and for the final performance, all of them came together to perform.
The band played five pieces, Westridge Overture by James Barnes, Scenes from the Louvre by Norman Dello Joio, National Emblem March by by Edwin Eugene Bagley, Feliz Navidad by Jose Feliciano, and On with the Snow, which was a medley of Christmas Carols, arranged by Douglas E. Wagner.
On with the Snow was a combined piece and was performed by the band and choir.
“I am proud of our student musicians in the band and chorus for their performance in this year's Winter Concert! Our group made steady progress throughout the fall, and I'm looking forward to studying music for our spring performance with our students,” said Band Director Mr. JP Scanga.
The chorus also sang a variety of different holiday songs including Festive Alleluia by Mary Lynn Lightfoot, Vamos Todos by Noe Sanchez, Somewhere in My Memory by John Williams, and A Collection of British Carols arranged by Douglas E Wagner.
The Women’s Ensemble also sang a few selections including Gloria by Ruth Elaine Schram, Personent Hodie by Gustav Holst, Nino Lindo by Dave and Jean Perry, and Christmas on Broadway which was arranged by John Higgins.
The two choirs joined forces on three songs: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by H. Martin and R. Blane, White Christmas by Irving Berlin, and of course, On With the Snow with the band.
“I thought the concert was a great first appearance of our choirs. It was terrific to do the combined piece with the band. I always love doing that!” said choir director Mrs. Susan Metelsky.
The student musicians perform again in concert in May.
