Happy last first day!
School’s in session, and August 25 seniors celebrated their first day back to school by watching the sunrise.
The event was organized by the Senior Class Officers and Principal Sean Snowden was present to oversee it. Seniors met outside on Tarquinio Field at 6:30 a.m., coffees in hands, wearing children’s backpacks, and excited to see the sun rise over the hill.
Although the weather was foggy, the students seemed very pleased with their morning.
Senior Giovanni Nuzzo said, “I wish the sun was out a little bit more, but it was fun to start out my senior year with everyone!”
Senior Class President Ana Avdellas, Vice President Ella Peluso, Secretary Alexandra Biela, and Treasurer Madeline O’Leary organized the event and promoted it on their Instagram account dedicated to the class of 2023, @beaverseniors23 (which is not officially affiliated with Beaver Area School District).
Peluso said that she and the other officers “didn’t really know what to expect for a turn-out: “we’ve never run a before-school event before. But we got inspiration from all the other senior sunrises we’ve seen!”
After the event, the seniors left the school, only to return about an hour later to start their first day. Teachers welcomed their students back eagerly, ready to be back together and to start an almost-normal school year.
“It’s always exciting for a new school year because it’s another opportunity to build more relationships with our students,” said Mr. Snowden. “Every school year has new challenges, every school year has new opportunities. [This year] we have a new superintendent, a new assistant superintendent, so those things are exciting to get the school year going and to start to follow their lead.”
Additionally, Mr. Snowden’s advice to the seniors in their final year is to “enjoy it! Enjoy your senior year, take every opportunity that you can to get engaged socially with your classmates because you’ll be surprised, after this school year ends, and everyone graduates and starts going their separate way, you may not see some people for many years. So I just encourage our seniors to have a great and fun senior year, and I’ll see them walk across the football field when they get their diplomas.”
