It’s the Christmas season! Curl up in blankets, get your hot chocolate, turn on the TV, and switch on a festive movie to get you in the Christmas spirit.
I’m sure we can all agree that the best holiday of the year also has the best movies attached to it. So many classics, so many comedies, so many great seasonal movies to watch this time of year.
Since there are a ton of Christmas movies for you to choose from, I narrowed it down to five exciting picks for this Christmas season.
Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer is a staple for anyone wanting to enjoy a Christmas movie that is fun for the whole family.
Directed by Larry Roemer, this stop-motion 1964 classic follows a reindeer that is ostracized for his red nose. Rudolph and Hermey the elf—a “misfit” just like Rudolph—undertake a journey to escape Santa’s North Pole. Later, they return and are welcomed with open arms, realizing that those who are different aren’t so bad after all.
It is a great message for children while including catchy tunes. Many classic Christmas songs are featured in this movie including “Holly Jolly Christmas” and of course “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” This is a must-watch every Christmas season.
If you want a good laugh while being told a heartwarming story, the new release Spirited is perfect for you.
Starring the comedians Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, this movie is the musical spin-off sequel of the classic Christmas movie/book A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Just like the original, there are four ghosts that visit a man stricken with greed and pride that try to help change his attitude. In a modern day setting, the ghost of Christmas past sets out to redeem a seemingly unredeemable man. This movie will surely bring you a good laugh and joy this season.
In the mood for a more serious movie? Well, The Polar Express might be the best option. This underrated animated 2004 movie (based on the 1985 children’s book of the same name) created by Robert Zemeckis encapsulates the essence of Christmas.
The story follows a young boy who doubts Santa’s existence. On Christmas Eve, a train visits his house and takes him on a journey to the North Pole. He discovers the beauty of friendship, believing, and kindness.
This movie isn’t just for children, though; it can be exciting for adults as well. The message of believing is for all ages. The animation is gorgeous as well (even if most adult characters in the film bear an unsettling resemblance to Tom Hanks).
If you are looking for another comedy movie, The Christmas Chronicles is the one for you.
Released in 2018 on Netflix, this film follows Kate and Teddy Pierce, siblings who want to catch Santa. When their plan slightly fails, the kids get to go along with Santa to help fix a disaster that unfolds on Christmas Eve.
But if you ask anyone what their favorite Christmas movie is, about 60% of those people would probably say A Christmas Story. It’s an oldie, but a goodie.
Directed by Bob Clark, this 1983 film is about young Ralphie who wants a specific toy for Christmas—a Red Ryder BB gun (doesn’t he know he’ll shoot his eye out?). It’s a classic and one of the most popular Christmas movies of all time. Bringing laughs and Christmas spirit to people every year, this is a great choice.
Don’t miss out on watching these fabulous Christmas movies and have a great holiday season!
