The days are getting longer, the nights are getting warmer, and the insides of cars are getting dangerously hot. Summer has blessed the world once again in all of its shining glory. While we're all out enjoying our three-ish months of freedom, here are some albums that'll make getting sunburned and heatstroke much more enjoyable.
I, Jonathan by Jonathan Richman
Every Jonathan Richman song takes an emotion and strips it to its most pure form. Whether he's singing about dancing in a lesbian bar or walking around Boston, all Jonathan Richman songs have this sense of wonder for the world. If we all saw life the way Richman does, we'd be a lot happier, and listening to this record may be able to bring that purity into our summer.
Doolittle by Pixies
Why not damage our ears along with our skin? Pixies brand of deafeningly distorted guitars is a perfect way of encapsulating the feeling of a sunburn. Whether Frank Black is screaming gibberish about religious concepts and roommates from Mexico, or crooning slowly about violent acts, his voice is one of the many I'll be letting control my summer excitement.
Album by Girls
Now let's have some fun. Album by Girls is one of those albums that feels like it exists outside of everything, as if it is the only record to sound like it. The warbly, reverb-drenched guitars and the nasally and spiritual vocals feel like eating a slice of pizza on a rooftop in California. The songs themselves are filled with aching, excitement, and energy, and are must-listens to have an eventfully chill summer.
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain by Pavement
Laziness never sounded so good until Pavement slowly crawled their way into the indie rock zeitgeist of the 90s. With Stephen Malkmus's simplistic guitar parts and slam-poetry like vocals overtop the tight backing groove of Scott Kannberg, Mark Inood, and Steve West, along with the "whatever" of Bob Nastanovich (whose main purpose in the band is to jump around and make noise), Pavement is just plain fun, and Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is one of the best examples of their slacker genius at work.
King of the Beach by Wavves
Like Girls, Wavves' music is filled with distortion, reverb, and an energy that can only be found on the west coast. Unlike Girls, all Wavves songs are just completely fun. The band yells about surfing, getting sunburnt, and give no room for any type of poetic introspection. It's just about having fun, which is exactly what everyone should be doing this summer. Don't bother yourself with everyday worries. We are young and free, so let's start acting like it.
