Bobcats, hang up your rackets and collect all the balls; the boys tennis season is officially over.
Coach Heidengren’s court Cats had an underwhelming season with a final split record of 3-3.
The Bobcats can normally count on at least one singles or doubles team to qualify for the WPIAL playoffs, but this was not the case for this year.
Junior Zack Masters proved to be the best player on the court this year with both his record and tournament qualifications. Masters received fourth in the section playoffs in the singles tournament.
The Bobcats fell to Blackhawk at home April 15 after a hard fought match against a much larger team. This was also the team’s senior day where they honored senior Ian McCarty-Cogis for his four years on the team.
The match against Blackhawk also marked the last tennis match on the old tennis courts before resurfacing and renovations began. The courts are set to be open for the summer, but the team had to travel to Brady’s Run Park to finish practicing for the season.
Only one day later the best Beaver Area doubles teams traveled to the home of the Cougars for the section doubles tournament.
For doubles, junior Heath Korzinsky and sophomore Sam Good proved to be the team with the best chemistry. They had the best overall record but were knocked out in the first round of the section tournament.
After being postponed three times due to inclement weather, the Bobcats were finally able to play against the Riverside Panthers April 17. The team won by a large margin.
To make up for prior matches canceled due to rain the Bobcats had another match the day after, April 18. This match was against the reigning WPIAL team champions and singles state champion, Sewickley Academy.
Despite hard fought games, the Bobcats were crushed by the Panthers.
The Bobcats chose not to attend the MAC tennis tournament due to postponements and underwhelming excitement about the match.
Yet despite the average season, positive attitudes prevailed.
“I think it was a good season and I think we can do even better next year and probably beat CV and Blackhawk,” said Good.
Let’s hope so—see you on the (new) courts next year.
