You may have seen another teacher lurking around Mrs. Green’s classroom recently. Her name is Ms. Rebecca Lasko, and she’s a student teacher from Slippery Rock University.
“I chose to student teach at Beaver because it’s close to home and it’s an excellent school,” said Ms. Lasko. “Beaver was my top choice!”
Before attending Slippery Rock, Ms. Lasko graduated Blackhawk High School. While at Blackhawk High School, Ms. Lasko focused her studies on writing courses such as the Beat (Blackhawk’s student newspaper) and creative writing.
Once Ms. Lasko chose to attend Slippery Rock, she delved into the world of English and creative writing. In fact, she majored in creative writing and, obviously, she is working on getting her teacher certification, which is why you may see her in Mrs. Green’s classroom.
In addition to teaching with Mrs. Green, for the first two months of the school year she spent her time with Mrs. Bixler to get some variety in teaching experience and techniques.
After earning her certification, Ms. Lasko plans to teach English 7-12 at a to-be-determined high school.
“I want to teach English,” said Ms. Lasko, “but I want to be where I am most useful as well. If Beaver opened up a spot for an English teacher, I would absolutely teach here.”
And so far, so good. Mrs. Green’s students seem to adore Ms. Lasko.
“She’s a great teacher,” said freshman Paula McCreary. “I love the way Ms. Lasko engages the class with challenging questions about a passage we read.”
Although Ms. Lasko will only be here for the first semester, be sure to stop and say hi every once in awhile. Let’s make her feel welcome at Beaver Area High School.
