Like many sports teams, the girls’ soccer team has had their fair share of highs and lows the past few weeks.
September 10 the girls tallied another win against South Side in a 6-0 victory, but the downside was it wasn’t a section game. Only section game wins can get the girls into the playoffs.
In the end, their win against South Side means nothing.
The next section game for the Bobcats was their game against Avonworth September 12. From the beginning of the season the team knew this would be their toughest competition.
Avonworth was the Section 2-A WPIAL Championship runner up and they have been know to be a tough competition against Beaver.
The girls team fell 5-0 in the end, but they fought a hard battle to the end.
The next game the girls played was against Ambridge September 14.
After a tough loss against Avonworth, the girls beat Ambridge 3-0 for their second section win. Although the game was a slow start with 0-0 at half, the girls managed to bring it back in the second half to win.
Before their next section game, the girls had another non-section game scheduled against Blackhawk September 15.
By the end of the of the game the score was 1-1, but Coach Nick Crivelli believes it was their hardest fought game to that date.
Captain and senior Kat Eck’s said about the Blackhawk game, “I think we played well against Blackhawk—especially in the second half of the game. We were down 1-0 and scored with five minutes left in the half. It picked up our energy going into overtime, and we were overall the better team; we just couldn’t get that final goal we needed. I think it was a great indicator what we can do going into the season.”
September 19 the Bobcats played the fourth section game of the season. The girls traveled to Quaker Valley for a tough game.
The score was 0-0 until the last five minutes. With an upsetting goal scored by QV the girls lost 1-0 at final. The girls naturally were disappointed with the outcome, but now the girls are fueled up to take QV down.
Although they came up short this game, Beaver Area has plans to take them down when QV comes to our home turf October 12.
But perhaps the craziest game was against long time competitor North Catholic came September 21.
North Catholic was last year’s WPIAL champion in the 2A section, and the Bobcats has been itching to beat them.
North Catholic got up 2-0 in the first half, but Beaver Area wasn’t done fighting. Throughout the game the Bobcats contained the Trojans and got great scoring opportunities.
The girls dominated the second half and scored two goals while still keeping high pressure against North Catholic. Freshman Ana Hahn scored one goal and junior Marina Hahn netted the other to tie the game 2-2 by the end of regulation gameplay.
Sadly, in the end the girls lost 3-2 in overtime, but to Coach Crivelli, this wasn’t a loss in his book.
“This game was the most amount of effort that I’ve seen this team play this season. Nothing was left out on the field; we played our hardest and didn’t give up. I know we lost, but we’re hungry and aren’t giving up on them yet,” said Coach Crivelli encouraging his team at the end of the match.
Although the game outcome wasn’t what the girls wanted, the team is hyped up and ready to come back for more.
Junior Sophia Hahn remarked, “It’s really our golden year. This team has been together since U10. We’ve gotten really close over the years, and it’s so much fun to be able to play with the girls that I’ve grown up with.”
The girls host the Hopewell Vikings tonight for their senior night celebration.
