You might win some and you might lose some, but you’ll always learn in the process. That sentiment certainly applies to their season’s boys basketball team.
January 7 the Bobcats traveled to Ambridge High School to tip off against the Bridgers. The JV boys played first and were able to squeak out the win 52-50 before varsity took the court. The varsity boys dominated possession all game and emerged victorious 74-37 over the Bridgers.
Juniors Aiden Townsend and Alex Tomalski were named players of the game for leading the team to victory over the Bridgers. Tomalski led the team with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. Although Townsend was not far behind with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 steals.
The Bobcats used this win as motivation going into a tournament the next day.
The Chuckie Mahoney Memorial Basketball Classic was held at Burgettstown High School January 8. The Bobcats tipped off against Weir High School (Weirton, WV) which would be their only game of the tournament. Ending the week on a high note by adding another win to the record book, the Bobcats came out of the game with a 79-58 win over the Red Riders.
Junior Sawyer Butler had an incredible performance at the tournament which got him named player of the game recording 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals.
“The tournament went really well and I think we made a lot of improvements to our gameplay,” said Tomalski.
After a few day break to rest, the boys took the court against a visiting Montour High School January 11. The Spartans are a big section rival for the Bobcats, so going into the game Coach Kaiser and the team knew they had to put in the work to pull off the win.
Despite the Bobcats hard work on the court, the varsity was not able to secure a win. It was a tough 77-42 loss for the varsity boys, but the JV boys were able to overcome the Spartans JV team and add a 59-53 win to their record.
Freshman Brady Mayo stepped up for the Bobcats and was named player of the game for his 12 points, 2 steals, and 1 assist.
The Montour match-up also provided an opportunity for Beaver Area’s first-ever rings ceremony as last season’s Beaver Area High School girls softball team was honored for being the 2021 PIAA State Champions and making school history. Superintendent Carrie Rowe presented each player and coach from the team with their own championship ring in honor of their big win.
The boys tipped off in a Friday night basketball game January 14 against Quaker Valley High School. The Bobcats understood this game would be tough and the boys showed up and put full effort into the game—although their work ethic was not reflected on the scoreboard at the end of the night: another tough loss for the Bobcats, 79-47.
Senior Ryan Noel put on a performance for the Bobcats and was named player of the game with 12 points, 2 steals, and 2 rebounds.
Four days later, the Bobcats to a ride across the river to face off against Central Valley High School. Like every game this season, the boys knew they had put in the work to get a win over the Warriors. After an intense nail biter, the game ended in another heartbreaking loss for the Bobcats, 49-47.
After a few tough losses, the Bobcats were on the hunt for a win when they tipped off against Hopewell High School January 21. Using what they learned from their previous games, the boys were able to execute their game plan and secure a much needed win, 59-42, over the Vikings.
“It feels great to get a win after a couple of losses. We are getting better each game and still have work that needs to be done,” said Townsend.
Both senior Josh Hill and Townsend had big games for the Bobcats leading them both to be the players of the game. Hill netted 10 points, had 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Townsend had 10 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks throughout the night.
As of this writing, the Bobcats sit at 7-8 with a solid chance of finishing the regular season with a winning record.
