Eternals Spoilers Ahead
The Marvel Cinematic Universe returns to the big screen this month with the latest addition to the movie franchise, Eternals. The long awaited Phase Four movie debuts the titular Eternals, placed on Earth with the mission to protect humanity from a dangerous alien species—deviants.
However, not all is as it seems, and the group of heroes soon discover their centuries-long “mission” has been a lie, along with much of what they’ve been told about their history.
The movie features a lineup of big name stars and up-and-coming actors. Gemma Chan, Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, and Kit Harrington are some of the well-known actors featured in the film.
Many fans were also excited to hear that pop singer Harry Styles makes an appearance in the film’s mid-credits scene as Eros, brother of Thanos.
Eternals also brings about a new era of inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Out of the ten immortal warriors featured, a majority are played by people of color, something that has not been seen before in the MCU. Additionally, the movie features the MCU’s first fully-deaf superhero, Makkari, portrayed by Lauren Ridloff, who communicates in the movie by using American Sign Language.
Eternals also breaks a chain of MCU films solely featuring straight heroes. Phastos, one of the Eternals, is openly gay in the movie and is married with an adoptive son. The film features an on-screen kiss between Phastos and his husband, a new milestone for Marvel.
While the action packed-fight scenes will draw many MCU fans, the emotional value of the movie can’t be downplayed. At its core, Eternals is a captivating story about found family, love, loss, and what it means to be human . . . even when you’re a superhuman.
The movie closes with a thrilling cliffhanger, and while Marvel has not yet given any information about a sequel, the movie’s closing card promises that The Eternals will return. Until they do, we can only speculate to the extent the group of heroes will play in the rest of the Multiverse Saga.
