This year has not been kind to Beaver Area's humble academic games program.
COVID has changed the structure of the academic games season beyond recognition. Instead of packing into dense meeting halls, players now log on to Zoom calls.
Because of this change, games like Equations and Linguistics—which require physical manipulatives in order to play—have been eliminated in favor of the simpler Propaganda, Current Events, and Presidents.
So far the team attended one Propaganda competition November 18.
"It was different from what we were used to, but it worked," said senior Jeff Allison.
The pandemic has also put the prospect of national competitions at risk due to the continued danger of travel and large events, likely relegating it to a Zoom call as well.
In all, the changes mentioned have disincentivized participation in the program for some students.
"I think a lot of people are having a tough time seeking motivation because all of the competitions are virtual. It isn’t nearly as fun since we don’t get to see our friends or go anywhere to compete," said senior Jonathan Suhayda.
Beaver Area’s team is again under the direction of veteran sponsor Mrs. Kelly McNeil-Korba.
National competitions, whether in person or virtual, will be April 16-19. Should an in-person option be chosen, it will be held in Oglebay, West Virginia. I heard it’s just wonderful there that time of year!
