After 27 years of supporting students and making a difference in middle school special education, Mr. Paul Briggs is retiring from his teaching career.

When did you start working at Beaver Area?

I started working here in 1999–27 years [ago]. I’ve done special education the whole time being here. I was briefly in the high school at the beginning, and then I’ve been in the middle school for the majority.

What inspired you to want to work here in the first place?

I like working with students.

What are your plans after retirement?

I’m probably going to continue working, maybe deal with healthcare. So just helping people really. Maybe travel some too.

What is a favorite memory that you have from your time at Beaver Area?

I think all the students I’ve had. You know, I think that’s what I look back at when someone asks what was the best thing about Beaver. It’s the students.

Are there any staff members or students who made a lasting impact on you?

Yeah, definitely Mr. King and Mr. Jarovich.

What is the biggest piece of advice that you can offer students and staff?

Disconnect. Get outside. Enjoy the sunshine. I’m a hypocrite too, because you know, they get me on the algorithms. I’m on YouTube shorts.

What is something that you will miss about being here

The students. They’ve kept me young.

If you could sum up your experience here in one sentence, what would it be?

The kids have kept me young. Because I’m almost 60 and I do not feel 60 or almost 60.
