Homecoming may have started quietly enough Tuesday, the start of the spirit week after the conclusion of a three-day weekend. But then came Wednesday.
Tuesday was crazy socks day, Wednesday was character day, Thursday was twin day, and Friday was maroon and gray day.
“Character day [Wednesday] was just a VSCO girl takeover; there were hydroflasks and scrunchies everywhere,” junior Mary Gaetano remarked.
The VSCO girl trend is essentially just a glorified 90’s surfer look featuring baggy shirts, scrunchies, hydroflasks [a popular water bottle], friendship bracelets made out of embroidery floss, and messy hair, which many girls—and a shocking number of boys—decided to rock.
Homecoming weekend’s athletic activities began with the boys varsity soccer game against Obama Academy which ended in a 1-1 tie Thursday evening.
Friday afternoon’s pep rally wasn't as popular among the students as hoped, but most found a silver lining in the situation.
"I really enjoyed Mr. [Scott] Hazuda's flip," exclaimed freshman Alexandra Furman about the teacher’s front round off.
"The rally was fun, and I got hit by one of those footballs they threw at us [the crowd]," junior Jaden Emerick stated. "I didn't enjoy it [the rally] much after that; we just did cheers."
Then came the most anticipated event . . . The Homecoming dance was a huge hit, and according to senior class sponsor Mrs. Erin Bechdel, 380 tickets were sold for the cafeteria cotillion.
"I enjoyed this dance; I thought the music was great, and the energy in the crowd was awesome," senior Andrew Votilla commented.
Sophomore Emily Garcia stated, "It was really nice to see how many people came out tonight."
However, not everyone enjoyed the dance: "The music was bad, and they ended it [the dance] early," freshman Brandon Osborne stated.
Saturday began with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Beaver Area High School choir. All earnings from the breakfast were put toward the choir's upcoming Disney trip.
The Battle of the Decades 5k family Fun Run began at the High School track. Runners could be spotted all over Beaver sporting their crazy decades-themed attire.
Downtown Beaver also got involved hosting multiple booths and live music filled the streets for the Downtown Beaver Art Walk.
"The vibes today were really chill; the jazz music was really nice," sophomore Dimitri Mathias remarked.
The parade only lasted for a few minutes, but it was an enjoyable experience for many nonetheless. Third Street was crowded with families from our community, and students tossed candy to the watching children as the afternoon procession crossed town.
But all good things must come to an end, and Homecoming came to an end at the conclusion of the Bobcats’ home game against Ambridge. Beaver won 20-7—a fitting conclusion to a fun-filled weekend and a welcome highlight for a struggling Bobcat team this season.
Fireworks celebrated the end of the game and completed the homecoming festivities for another year.
