Well, well, well, President Joe Biden is at it again with his grand plan to “Build Back Better.”
August 24, President Biden announced a three-part plan which promised to relieve those with federal student loans of $10,000. And, according to the White House website, these funds will be directed to “borrowers who need it most,” meaning low- to middle-income borrowers.
According to Business Insider, the average annual tuition cost for a four-year degree from a public state university was approximately $10,740/year for in-state students, and $27,560/year for out-of-state students. This doesn’t include room and board, books, or other general expenses that add to your debt.
The total federal student loan debt sits around $1.6 trillion, and borrowers average around $37,667 in debt.
Yes, theoretically, forgiving a portion of student loans would make things easier on borrowers, but in reality it doesn’t. The White House fails to specify where this money will come from, but it is likely that it will come from taxpayer dollars. Everyone knows that money isn’t free, right? You always hear people jokingly say that “money doesn’t just grow on trees,” and that couldn’t be more true, yet it seems President Biden needs to be reminded of this.
If you are a federal student loan borrower, $10,000 forgiven may seem like it’s your lucky day, but if this money does come from taxpayer dollars, you’ll still be paying that $10,000 back to the government for your loans, only now you’ll be paying for other people’s loans as well. That sounds a little sketchy to me. Not to mention that blue-collar workers, some in the military, and all other Americans who never go to college will be paying off other people’s college loans. They avoided going to college—only to end up paying for it after all. That one’s a head-scratcher.
No doubt this move is a ploy by the Biden administration to win votes with the upcoming midterm elections in November. The administration is crumbling and making a last effort to win some desperately needed votes. The country sees what this administration has done first hand, and now the administration just wants to add more fuel to our economic dumpster fire.
Money doesn’t grow on trees, Joe. It’s time you learned that before you write checks the country can’t cash.
