As this school year comes to a close, the JROTC Bobcat Battalion continued to stay busy until the final bell for summer.
Continuing the excellence from the past two years, the Beaver Area JROTC continued their Service Learning Projects for College Square, Dutch Ridge, and the Beaver Heritage Museum.
The College Square SLP took place April 26 at the Beaver Heritage Museum. Cadets volunteered to teach first graders some Beaver history in a fun way. Cadets led as guides to give a tour of the log cabin, doll house, and museum as well as teaching the kids some old games from early Beaver history.
The Dutch Ridge SLP took place May 8 at Dutch Ridge for sixth grade students. The JROTC cadets ran stations teaching early Beaver history through games such as tug-of-war, relay races, and Gaga Ball as well as displaying some of their teams such as Drill, Raiders, and Drum and Fife.
The final SLP of the year took place May 18 at the Heritage museum for the public. The cadets once again led tours and got to display some of their teams.
But it’s not all work for the cadets. At the end of April into the beginning of May, JROTC’s senior cadets took their annual senior trip—this time to Florida to reward the graduating seniors as well as allowing the outgoing leadership to select this coming school year’s leadership.
The seniors along with COL Wilson and SGM Weaver spent five days in Central Florida and got to go to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, visit Cocoa Beach, and spend time at a mini golf and go-cart course.
With the new leadership decided in Florida, it was now time for the new leadership to take charge at this year’s change of command May 13. Outgoing Battalion Commander senior Samantha Anderson passed the torch to this coming year’s new Battalion Commander junior Ava Haverstock.
“I hope to continue on what has been laid out for me. I look forward to a great year,” said Haverstock during her welcome speech.
In what has become an end-of-year tradition, May 23 the cadets showcased their program to this year’s eighth graders at their annual Leadership Day. Leadership Day is the first chance for new battalion leadership to plan and conduct their first event.
This year’s Leadership Day helped eighth graders understand the JROTC teams and inter workings of the battalion as well as get to play some fun teamwork games along the way.
“Leadership Day is always a great success because the eighth graders always have tons of fun. It was great to see so many [middle school] kids sign up after we didn’t get as many last year,” said COL Wilson.
And in one of their final school year activities, be sure to look for the Beaver Area JROTC as they march the Memorial Day Parade May 27.
