Under rainy skies, the annual Beaver Area High School powderpuff games were held October 26 on the Pat Tarquinio field.
This year’s games were a fundraiser for the junior and senior classes. It took considerable effort by the class officers to put together the event, organizing concessions, teams, and so much more.
Unlike past years which featured a single game of juniors vs. seniors, this year’s event was open to every grade, and it was $10 per girl to play.
The boys on the football team coached the girls for about a week in preparation for the games. They created plays and assigned positions to each girl.
The first game was at 10:30 a.m. between the seniors and the freshmen. The freshmen took the lead early and kept it all game, shockingly. The seniors were favored to win due to their previous win against last year’s seniors the year prior.
“Powderpuff was always something my friends and I were looking forward to. We never expected to start off by playing the seniors, and we definitely did not expect to beat the seniors as freshmen and make it to the championship game. Even though we lost to the juniors [in the final] it was a very fun experience that I look forward to doing again,” said freshman Ana Avdellas.
Shortly after, the juniors took on the sophomores in a tough battle. The teams were pretty evenly matched but the juniors came out on top.
“It was a great experience where all grades could come together, compete, and have a great time,” said junior Eden McElhaney.
“The juniors killed us, but Delaney Young was the MVP,” said sophomore coach Wyatt Ringer.
The championship game was held at 1 p.m. between the freshmen and the juniors. The juniors took off from the start with a lead and played hard the whole game.
The juniors came out victorious of the whole day.
Through participation fees and collections from the attendees, the event raised $801.27 which will be split between prom and senior banquet funds.
