For many cross country runners, it’s the most stressful time of the year. It’s time for the Tri States and WPIALs.
October 21, the team travelled again to White Oak Park for the TSTCA championship. Out of the 20 schools in their section, Beaver Area placed seventh in the boys' competition and sixth in the girls'.
Senior Will Lamb and sophomore Ella Andrew achieved an impressive finish as always, coming in sixth and fourth respectively. They were the only runners to receive any "hardware," or physical awards for their efforts.
Additionally, junior Krystof Purtell—a two-sport competitor who also plays soccer—got a personal best time of 17:48, coming in 24.
Andrew believes that the girls' team competed admirably despite their limitations.
"I think we did well even though we were missing a few girls that race. Our times were a bit slower than usual, but we still placed well," Andrew said.
At WPIALs October 28, the results largely mirrored Tri States, with Lamb finishing an impressive fifth and Andrew finishing 19 in a crowded field. Lamb was also the only runner to qualify for state competitions at Hershey this Saturday.
With the season over for everyone but Lamb, the other runners are taking stock of the season as a whole. Senior Isabella DiPietriantonio believes it was one of the best yet.
"Overall, I think we actually did have a great season! Many of us PR'd as the season continued and pushed through any injuries. It’s been an amazing team to be a part of my senior year," DiPietriantonio said.
Even though no other runners will be joining him for states, Lamb's teammates have been encouraged to continue practicing to keep in shape for the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
When asked how he thinks state competitions will go for him, Lamb had a simple prediction.
"It’s going to be a fast race."
