It’s that time of year again: snow is falling, holiday lights are strung—and Spotify has released their annual wrapped reports.
December 1, Spotify allowed users to access their 2021 listening history.
Spotify Wrapped is a yearly tradition from the streaming service, allowing users to see their top songs, artists, genres, and total listening time for the year.
Each year the layout is varied slightly, and 2021 is no different. Featuring an interactive user interface, the streaming service allowed users to play a game of Two Truths and a Lie based on their listening patterns. Users were given three statements and were challenged to find which one was the lie.
Additionally, a “vibe check” was provided to users based on their music, allowing them to see what their “audio aura” is. There were many different descriptors, and many users enjoyed sharing their results. Some people were described as “wistful hopeless romantics,” some described as “hopeful and intense,” while others were “confident and empowering.”
Another key feature of the Wrapped is listening time, a point of pride for many dedicated listeners. Many reports tend to clock in from 25,000–50,000 minutes, but there are some very high outliers as well (looking at you, 100k+ minutes listeners).
There has been some negative feedback from users about the incomprehensible genres from the music service, however. Genres such as “Weirdcore”, “Hyperpop”, or “Dream SMP” were listed on top genre reports. Since these genres are hard to define and almost subgenres of other music types, many expressed discontent with those results.
There are many variations of Spotify Wrapped reports, and to show how different they can be, we’ve compared our results.
Larisa:
To my surprise, my top song this year was “Line without a Hook” by Ricky Montgomery, which, according to Spotfy, I listened to 253 times. Most of the songs in my top-five were ones from my favorite playlists, so I wasn’t too surprised, although I definitely couldn’t have predicted all of them.
My top artist for the year was The Neighborhood, which was also surprising, since I typically don’t actively listen to them, but I do enjoy their music when it comes up on my Daily Mixes. My other top artists were COIN, Hozier, Bastille, and The Happy Fits.
Unsurprisingly, my top genre this year was Indie pop, followed closely by Modern Alternative Rock.
This year I clocked in 128,054 minutes—or about 89 days—of total listening. I honestly didn’t think it was that high of a number, but according to the Spotify Wrapped Story, it’s more than 99% of other listeners in the United States.
GK:
For my Wrapped this year, my top song ended up being “Like a Girl” by Lizzo, clocking in at 89 total listens. In fact, my top-five songs were all by Lizzo, which was what I expected.
Despite the fact that I had listened to so much Lizzo, my top artist this year was Lemon Demon, and I ended up being in the top 0.5% of their listeners. I was confused at first, because I usually don’t listen to Lemon Demon in my free time, until I remembered that I play music while I sleep all night. Considering the fact I have their entire discography in my playlist, I guess I’m not too surprised that the numbers got a little inflated. My other top artists were The Scary Jokes, Kero Kero Bonito, and Louie Zong.
I was one of the many individuals who got cursed with a very strange top genre report. My top genre ended up being Weirdcore, and a lot of people don’t really understand what that means—myself included. My other genres were dance pop, indie pop, rhythm game, and hyperpop.
I ended up having a total of 106,386 minutes listened this year, which puts me above 98% of the listeners in the US. Not much of a surprise, considering I always have music playing all night long.
