“It’s definitely different for me; it is like coming to a land of strangers and shifting gears, while trying to think of things differently. It’s been different but it’s been awesome,” stated Dr. Mark Holtzman, Beaver Area’s first superintendent in over a half century who comes to us with no prior connections to the district.
Dr. Holtzman hails from McKeesport by way of Syracuse University where he played college football.
“I’m a people person; I like to have a little bit of fun; I’m a regular guy despite my appearance,” stated the NFL-sized educator.
“I want to build my leadership style all around the people of the community,” Dr. Holtzman expressed when referring to his goals for this school year.
“It’s not about reputation or necessarily money, it's more about making relationships that last with those in our district,” Dr. Holtzman said.
Dr. Holtzman also briefly commented about his excitement regarding the high school’s indoor pool and outdoor track renovation: “I’m excited to just see how things operate.”
The new superintendent noted the difference between McKeesport Area School district, where he was a former student, principal, and superintendent, and his new position at Beaver Area. Though Beaver has limited diversity, we also enjoy hardly any bad press or ongoing scandals, which is a large difference from Tiger country.
“This community is overall very different and new to me, and I’m so excited to be here. It seems like a cool place.”
Dr. Holtzman’s impressive experience includes five years as the McKeesport superintendent, five years as the McKeesport Area High School principal, as well as a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Pittsburgh.
He’s also a family man who speaks lovingly about his wife, Ashley, and their four children—and dog, Creed.
We welcome Dr. Holtzman and wish him a successful first year with the Bobcats.
