It’s official: November 14, 30 new students were inducted into the Fort McIntosh Chapter of the National Honor Society.
The inductees were honored in a ceremony that took place in the high school auditorium. The ceremony was hosted by NHS Historian senior Mia Woodske, Parliamentarian senior Marina Hahn, and Sponsor Mrs. Erin Bechdel who led the members and audience through the introduction and history of the National Honor Society.
After introductions from these individuals and High School Principal Mr. Sean Snowden, candles were lit to honor the four pillars of the National Honor Society. These candles represent Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.
The candles were accompanied by explanations of the virtues by various NHS officers including President senior Elle Taylor, Secretary senior Madeline Boser, Vice-President senior Sophia Hahn, and Treasurer senior Elizabeth Michael.
Beaver Area English Teacher Mr. Thomas Kissick and District Superintendent Dr. Mark Holtzman also spoke during the ceremony, both choosing to highlight students’ achievements in their communities and academics.
Inductees were called up to the stage by the current members and had their unique talents and achievements shared in a short paragraph written before the ceremony.
Inductees also took the opportunity to sign their names into Beaver Area’s official NHS charter logbook, continuing a longstanding tradition for all former NHS members.
The highlight of the night for many students came after the inductees recited the official National Honor Society Pledge. Audience members were invited to join students in an a cappella version of the Beaver Area Alma Mater, but don’t worry, lyrics were provided.
The audience had a nice turnout made up mostly of parents and friends. Afterward, they joined together for a cookies in the lobby in a celebration of student achievement.
Now that the new members have been inducted, official NHS meetings will take place each month. NHS students will be responsible for various service projects throughout the year including backpack donations and a fun trivia night later in the year.
This new group of inductees hopes to honor the legacy of past National Honor Society members through service to the community and dedication to the school.
