The seniors are the reigning champions! November 15, the annual Powderpuff tournament junior class fundraiser was held on the Pat Tarquinio football field.
Players and coaches arrived at 12:30 p.m. to go over game plans and trick plays. Cheerleaders arrived at 12:45 p.m. to meet with junior class sponsor Ms. Courtney Bauder.
To begin the day, the senior team swept the freshmen 21-0 in the first flag football game of the day. Hand off plays from senior quarterback Antonella Brkich helped push the seniors to victory.
Following the victory, Brkich said, “Losing isn’t an option; we need to beat the juniors again this year!”
In between games, players were offered free water from the concession stand. Parents and spectators had many snack options at the concession stand as well. The concession stand offered the usual selections, along with chips and candy. All concessions proceeds, like ticket sales, benefited the junior class and prom.
For the day’s second matchup, the sophomores fought hard against the juniors, ready to face the seniors in the championship. Despite a strong fight, the sophomores came up short 14-0.
Senior coach Josh Derringer said, “Let’s get hype! Get ready to win,”
Senior coaches Junior Marino and Derringer had a game plan, coming up with smart plays and thinking on their feet. Despite advancing to the ten yard line, the juniors were unable to score a touchdown before halftime. The seniors put up an ironclad defense keeping standout player junior Alaina Mollura from scoring.
Marino was happy with how the team played saying, “We can just run the ball and we’ll be fine. The juniors haven’t caught onto our hand-off plays.”
Coming back from halftime, the juniors were ready to score; however, the senior defense proved to be unbreakable yet again. The game concluded with a score of 14-0, making the seniors two-time champions.
Junior class sponsor Mrs Bauder said, “We raised a good bit of money for prom. We raised about $150 from concessions!”
