Look out: the boys’ golf team is on a winning streak this season. The team is currently 10-3 in their section.
The first tee off and win for the Cats was August 8 against Burgettstown with a score of 257-233.
About the match senior Trevor Schmidt said, “257 was not our best score, but I was still confident we were going to win.”
The Cats’ second match of the year was important for how the rest of the season was going to play out. It was against South Side August 12 at Ponderosa Golf Course. Sadly, the Cats were sent home with a loss by 3.
They got back on track with a win against Rochester August 14 with a team score of 211, topping the 275 score that the Rams put up.
The Cats captured another win against New Brighton August 16. But that was followed by one of their three losses against Chartiers Valley 240-209.
Although they were able to bounce back with a win against Freedom Area August 21 with a score of 223-293 which was followed by a big comeback win against South Side.
Schmidt shot an impressive 38, which is one stroke over par at Seven Oaks Country club (the Bobcat golf team's home course). Senior Nick Krzeczowski followed right behind Schmidt shooting an equally impressive 39.
The Cats pulled out another win against Beaver falls August 26. This was an easy win and helped the Cats secure their winning streak to put them first in the section.
Beaver Area traveled to Blackhawk Golf Course August 28 to compete against Blackhawk. Unfortunately the cats came up short with a score of 216-205. However, the loss didn’t affect their section record since Blackhawk is not in their section.
In a busy stretch, September 3 was the Cats’ next win against Rochester followed by a win over Fort Cherry September 4, New Brighton September 6, and Freedom Area September 9.
Freedom Area was a clutch win for the Bobcats. Schmidt shot 37, Krzeczowski shot 40, and sophomore Derek Hughes finished with 39.
New Brighton, Freedom Area, and Rochester were all section wins which put the Bobcats at first in their section tied with South Side—ironically, South Side’s only loss is to Beaver, and Beaver’s only loss is to South Side.
The team’s top-three golfers are Schmidt, Krzeczowski, and Hughes. All three qualified for the MAC Championship September 10. For MACs, teams send their three best golfers.
Scores from 18 holes that day were Hughes with a 76, Schmidt with 79, and Krzeczowski with 92. The boys did well but not quite well enough to medal.
Despite the MAC hiccup, the team has officially secured their playoff spot and will make a run in WPIALs in the coming weeks. Be sure to check the next ECHO for more golf coverage.
