Greetings Bobcats!
I come to you from the world of tomorrow where PE class takes place in a cosmic world!
Just kidding—don’t worry I am not an alien . . . I think.
After my transformative experience during bowling I can confidently say that Cosmic Bowling with Best Buddies may have turned me into a cosmic being only capable of producing happiness and light.
Now you may be asking, what is cosmic bowling?
Cosmic bowling is an event held spanning two school periods in the middle school gym in which our Partners in PE buddies and partners (hence the course name) bowl in a darkened middle school gym. Lit with black lights and glow-in-the-dark decorations, this cosmic event gives Avatar a run for its money.
Originally, Cosmic Bowling was established to act “as a thank-you to the partners and staff who took a chance and helped pilot the program,” said sponsor and PE teacher Ms. Susan Pilarski.
Now a semester tradition, Cosmic Bowling was chosen for Beaver Area’s learning needs students because it was an activity which anyone, regardless of their abilities, could enjoy.
For the first event, Ms. Pilarski had to borrow equipment from The Beastly Haunt. Later, as a result of the event's success, Ms. Pilarski was given the “black light” (her joke, not mine) by the student services and PE departments to purchase things like black lights, decorations, and bowling equipment.
The lead decorators for recent bowling events are Emma Capers and Levin Fleming who rescue Ms. Pilarski from her lack of decorating expertise. Ms. P. mentioned how she would “be completely lost” without them.
Some of the attendees for last semesters event were the athletes (Cheryl LaClair, Ayden Pichardo, Michael Johnston, Conway Gordon, Micah Bechdel, and Bella Pardue), the partners (myself, Kallie Reap, Alicia Gaiser, Meghan Boyd, Addison Mack, Devin Anderson, Lillian McClemens, and Ava Haverstock), Ms. Renee, Mrs. Phillips, Madelyn Silbaugh, Dr. Hiles, Mrs. Flemming, Ms. Susan and Karin Pilarski, Dr. Murphy, and Ms. Abel.
Ms. Pilarski wanted to give a special thanks: “Thank you to the PE department, Mrs. Gailey, Mr. Russ, the other Miss P. (my sister, Karin), Mrs. Belhumeur, Dr. Murphy, in-season coaches, the decorators (Capers and Fleming), the set-up crew this year (Megahn Boyd, Ava Haverstock, and Madelyn Silbaugh), the tear down crew this year (Molly O'Neill, Fiona O'Leary, and Helaina Householder).”
Cosmic Bowling was such a fun event that I am grateful to have been a part of and I hope you readers can participate next year by becoming a PE Partner!
