When most people think of student activities and clubs, the usual suspects come to mind: sports, NHS, foreign language clubs, TLC, maybe the chess club, but there are other ways for students to be involved—and benefit others at the same time. And a new Beaver Area student club hopes to do just that.
A mental health awareness club has been created here at Beaver Area High School in order to promote awareness for mental health disorders and grief awareness.
The club, sponsored by guidance counselor Mrs. Caitlyn Belhumeur, has been working hard by making posters and buttons to sell in order to promote mental health care and also organizing an assembly that will allow students in the club to share information on mental health issues and ways to help fellow students in order to spread awareness.
The new club has been meeting once or twice a week since forming in October. The club doesn’t yet have a huge slate of activities planned for the future; they really just want to spread the word and get people on board with the idea that people dealing mental health concerns are all around us.
Mrs. Belhumeur started the club because Beaver Area had no other club like it and she felt that such awareness is a good thing to promote among high school students.
“I’m really excited for the club to progress, and I think it’s going to be a good way to spread awareness!” said senior Devyn Campbell who is active in the club.
