Sure, everyone knows about the major holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and the Fourth of July, but what about all of those obscure holidays you occasionally hear mentioned? Well, here are some you might not know about (but probably should) . . .
Pi Day - March 14
Pi Day is easy to remember because its date follows the number pi (3.14). More specifically it should be celebrated with a slice of pie at exactly 1:59 PM and 26 seconds.
Earth Day - April 22
At the zenith of spring, Earth Day is celebrated. This day is mostly for celebrating and remembering to take care of our environment and wildlife. From flowers to hedge hogs and bears to sea slugs, everything deserves attention. Some ways to celebrate Earth Day might be planting flowers, setting up a bird feeder, picking up trash in the woods, or even reading a book outside.
Hamburger Day - May 28
We, after all, live in America, so we have to ask ourselves what important cultural significance we have brought to the world. We then look to the hamburger—one of the best culinary inventions of this continent. You should all eat hamburgers on Hamburger Day and celebrate our country’s fine taste of cultured food.
Pokémon Day - February 27
Ever since 1996, Pokémon have been roaming the world: in trading cards, on the internet, and through mobile games. There are now over 1000 Pokémon, and even if you don’t like (or catch) all of them, you have to at least like some.
National Bavarian Crepes Day - March 22
Although not American food, we have to take special consideration for the proper representation of Bavarian Crepes.
World UFO Day - July 2
Since there are no alien inhabitants with us (that we know of), we can collectively celebrate this special day with our cosmic friends. However, we can always keep watching the sky to see if they come, or watch some alien movies like Aliens, E.T., or Elio.
Ice Cream Day - July 20
Ice cream day should be every day, but sadly you have to wait another 31,470,529 seconds until it comes around again. On ice cream day you should go to one of the local shops. Some shops locally are Brusters, Witch Flavor, and Black Bird Market.
Tell a Joke Day - Aug 16
If you don’t have a huge database of jokes here are some:
Two fish sitting in a tank. One turns to the other and says, "do you know how to drive this thing?"
Why did the chicken cross the playground? To get to the other slide.
What do you give a sick lemon? Lemon aid.
I took the shell off my racing snail thinking it would make him run faster. If anything, it made him more sluggish.
Pluto Demoted Day - Aug 24
On this day we remember the said fate of Pluto: August 24, 2026, Pluto was declared by the International Astronomical Union as a dwarf planet. Though Pluto shall still be remembered as a pinnacle member of our solar system.
Taco Day - Oct 4
Having taco Tuesday every single week is not enough. Why not have it for an extra day each year? On rare occasions Taco day will line up with taco Tuesday, then it’s a true fiesta.
Mole Day - Oct 23
This day celebrates Avogadro's number (6.022x10^26) which is used to count the number of atoms in substances. Festivities begin at 6:02 a.m. and end at 6:02 p.m. The unit of measurement is called a mol, but this day can also be for moles with an e. Here are some fun facts about moles and mols:
Moles have an extremely high metabolism and will starve in a few hours without food.
If you had a mol of pennies you could give every person on the planet 1 trillion dollars and still coat the world in copper.
A group of moles is called a “labor.”
If you had a mol of moles there would be enough to inhabit a billion planets.
Origami Day - Nov 11
You don’t have to be an expert in origami to fold basically anything. There are directions for everything from cranes to dragons online. On this day, you should fold a paper animal and then leave it for someone to find.
