“Hi, how are ya?”
It seems like every YouTuber these days is releasing merchandise like jackets, shirts, and accessories, which are solely purchased by the people who want to support their favorite stars.
We’ve seen the formula: Normally, a few posts are made on social media where YouTube celebrities express their excitement over a secret they’re keeping, then later release a video about how hard they’ve “worked” on the product and how they want their subscribers to enjoy it.
So why is the Jeffree Star Cosmetics x Shane Dawson collaboration any different?
Near the end of the YouTube documentary, “The Secret Life of Jeffree Star,” Dawson and Star played around with the idea of a makeup collaboration, even though Dawson wasn’t considered to be a makeup YouTuber at the time (he was mostly known for conspiracy theories).
Dawson then released a six-part series, “The Beautiful Life of Jeffree Star,” which was basically an extended advertisement for Dawson’s new merch line and cosmetics collaboration. This series attracted fans of the two YouTubers and people who were simply interested in the process of creating a makeup pallet from just an idea all the way to production.
The highly anticipated Jeffree Star Cosmetics x Shane Dawson Conspiracy collection was released November 1 at 11 a.m. PST (1 p.m. EST) and featured two eyeshadow palettes, six liquid lipsticks, a gloss, lip balm, two mirrors, and three styles of makeup bags.
But fans were disappointed when they couldn’t purchase the coveted makeup.
“I had over $200 [worth of merchandise] in my cart, but before I could purchase the palette the whole site crashed and I didn’t get to purchase any of the merchandise sold on the website,” lamented junior Emma Oberg, “I was very upset.”
The site crashed before the makeup was launched since Shopify, the e-commerce shop that hosts JSC, couldn’t support all of the people trying to make a purchase.
Fortunately, this collection will be a permanent part of Jeffree Star Cosmetics, so don’t be too bummed out if you can’t get a pallet. There should be a restock of the whole collection in early 2020, so watch out for updates from Dawson and Star.
“I can’t wait for the restock in 2020,” exclaimed sophomore Tess Porterfield.
