November 8 Pennsylvania will head to the polls to select a new senator to represent us in the United States Senate.
This year, the race is between Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz.
Frankly, looking at both candidates' platforms, our state is in a lose-lose situation.
Fetterman is attempting to win some votes with a very no-nonsense mentality that is hardly seen amongst the Democratic Party which could be beneficial in winning over some anti-Oz conservatives and appear more reliable in the eyes of the public.
However, break through the facade and you will find he is just another cookie-cutter liberal. According to his website, his platform includes defending abortion, legalizing cannabis, “securing” LGBTQ+ rights, and fighting towards universal healthcare.
Now to some, he may sound perfect, that there couldn’t possibly be a better candidate for PA, and they have every right to believe that. However, his ways are the wrong ways; it won’t come as a surprise to many that I don’t particularly support these issues he is promising to fight for.
What is also concerning about Fetterman is his ability to do the job due to recent health issues. Fetterman suffered a “near-death experience” after having a stroke in mid-May which has left him with impaired speech and hearing.
On the other side of the aisle, Oz, a popular television physician who has appeared on daytime television, has taken the Republican Party by storm and fire—and not in a good way.
He landed a very un-enthusiastic support of the GOP, and surveying suggested that only 53 percent of Pennsylvania Republicans see him favorably. A big factor in this opinion is that Oz isn’t seen as a true “Pennsylvanian.” In fact, Oz hails from Cleveland, Ohio. A PA candidate from Cleveland Browns territory? That’s a no-go from Pennsylvanians.
In addition to this, he has been dubbed as a RINO (Republican in Name Only) meaning he is running as a Republican, but holds liberal views.
Oz’s former primaries opponent, David McCormick, described PA Republicans’ dislike of Oz due to the fact that “he’s got a whole set of positions from life in the media, a life in television, and all of them counter to what Pennsylvanians believe in terms of the Second Amendment, in terms of life, in terms of fracking.”
Pennsylvania appears to be in a lose-lose situation here, but it’s up to us to decide who will be victorious. Time will tell which man will be better for our state.
