After a strong start to the season, the Cats’ basketball season came to an abrupt stop.
Just before Governor Tom Wolf’s newly implemented COVID restrictions took effect, the Cats were able to play and win big for their first and only game of 2020. The girls defeated the North Hill Indians December 11 with an outstanding blowout score of 58-6.
“Getting the chance to play Friday night was bittersweet. I was glad to be back on the court; it was sad knowing that we’ll have to wait to play again. Everyone played great, and despite the empty gym, our energy filled the void,” explained senior Kenzie Weiland.
Per Gov. Wolf’s mandate, all high school sports are postponed until January 3. This leaves about three weeks until the Cats can step on the court again as a team.
“I’m frustrated that decisions keep getting changed, but I’m very hopeful to play more games. It’s stressful to not know what’s coming in the future. I think we should be able to continue our season after Christmas. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season in January,” expressed senior Anna Blum.
“The worst part about all of this is that what the future holds for us is unknown. It's frustrating not knowing whether we’ll be playing or not, but like everything else right now, we’ll just have to adjust. All of these changes have definitely made us stronger--and when we get back in the gym, we’re going to be excited and ready to go,” stated Kenzie Weiland following Blum’s response.
As of right now, the Cats are doing workouts over Zoom. These workouts consist of conditions for the first half of the session. Then for the second half it’s either reviewing team stuff, like plays, or team bonding activities.
The girls are also expected to stay in shape and work out on their own.
The Cats’ next game remains unannounced because of the temporary suspension of all school athletic activities. But as soon as they’re allowed to return to the gym, these Cats are sure to pounce.
