Elvis has left the building . . . The hockey season has come to an end for the Beaver Area Ice Cats.
The Bobcats returned home January 30 to face off against Chartiers Valley. Sadly, an overpowering offense from the Colts proved to be too much for the Bobcats to handle as they would fall 9-2 with both goals being scored by freshman Mike Derda.
Next up for the Bobcats would be a road game against Meadville February 3. The Bobcats fell short 6-4, but they had sophomore Sammy Mecchia score a hat trick and senior Zack Masters scored the other goal.
Nearing the end of the season, it was time for the Ice Cats to have their senior night February 6 against Shaler. Dampening the senior celebration, the Titans’ explosive offense led them to a 9-1 win with Beaver Area’s only goal scored by freshman Brooke Goulder.
Looking to brush off the big defeat and bounce back, the Bobcats traveled to McDowell February 11. In a back-and-forth game both teams exchanged goals twice leaving the game tied 2-2 going into overtime with the goals being scored by junior Danny Cogis and sophomore Evan Schmidt. However, McDowell was able to prevail late in overtime, handing Beaver Area a 3-2 loss.
The last game of the season for the Bobcats would be against bitter rivals Blackhawk February 20. Beaver Area was able to jump out to a 4-1 lead thanks to another hat trick from Mecchia and goal by sophomore Colin Justice.
Unfortunately, the Bobcats were unable to hold onto to the lead as the Cougars tied the game 4-4 sending play into overtime. Beaver Area suffered defeat with another late goal conceded in overtime 5-4 in the final game of the season.
“This season may not have been the outcome we wanted, but we grew as a team and a family. As a captain, I made lots of new friends who I watched grow throughout the course of the season and enjoyed spending time with everyone,” said senior Trevor Schmidt.
The Bobcats finished this season with a record of 4-13-3.
