If you haven’t already noticed, the school’s science rooms look a little different this year.
Over the summer, the high school science rooms got a fresh renovation: new chairs, rolling tables, dishwashers, updated cabinets, new gas and water lines, fresh floors, and the cubbies that were always full of trash are finally gone.
And the updates seem to be going over quite nicely with the staff, too.
Physics computer science teacher Mr. Jim Hanlon said of the renovation, “It’s pretty much what I wanted . . . the room is more open, the chairs are comfortable, and the rolling tables move for labs.”
Chemistry teacher Mrs. Ledea Obrist was just as excited for the new update, if not more. Mrs. Obrist’s room is maybe the most noticeably different with brand new tables that double as lab stations replacing the old setup of separate desks and lab stations.
Even though her student-painted desks are gone, she still enjoys the remodel, stating that the room was “too cramped before” and that now she can “move around so much more.”
Also, a brand new dishwasher has made its way into the chemistry storage room, so she doesn’t have to wash all of the lab equipment by hand.
Chemistry teacher Mrs. Sara Fritz said of her renovated room: “It’s spacious, easier to get around for labs.”
Similar to Mrs. Obrist’s room, Mrs. Fritz’s tables are also lab stations, she shares the dishwasher with Mrs. Obrist, and there are new whiteboards.
It’s not just the science teachers who enjoy these updates, either. Students seem to approve of the remodeling, saying that it is “nice and new,” “fresh,” or even “majestic.”
However, not everything is perfect about the updates. For starters, Mr. Hanlon’s new gas valves are defective, and he has to replace them again. Furthermore, safety showers are missing drains, some students complain that the rooms are still too cold, and sadly, Mrs. Obrist’s signature student-painted desks are gone, giving the room an insipid feel.
Despite a few bumps, the science room revamps give teachers and students a brand new start for this school year, and even this little refresh mostly is appreciated by all.
