Fall has just arrived, and along with pumpkin spice and cold weather comes another very important season: musical audition season!
Yes, you heard it right: it’s time to submit your videos for a part in this year’s Spring Musical at Beaver Area High School.
If you’re new to the process and you are interested in this fun extracurricular, we’re here to help get you all the information and encouragement you need.
To get in the musical spirit, we asked a few of the people involved in this process to share their favorite thing about it to help convince new people to join.
Musical choreographer Mrs. Heather Bixler said: “I absolutely love getting to know students in a different arena other than the classroom. Because I only teach juniors and seniors for the most part, meeting and developing relationships with underclassmen is exciting and fun! I think seeing and interacting with each other outside of a classroom encourages positive teacher-student relationships. Not every student is great at academics or enjoys English class, but getting to see students (and them getting to see me) passionate about the arts and excelling on stage truly delights me.”
Director Mrs. Susan Metelsky shared, “I really do not care for this part of the process. Whatever show I choose will end up creating some drama . . . and not the stage kind. Some students will always be upset, and I do not feel good about that.”
And for some extra encouragement, student musical veterans offered some advice to newcomers.
Junior Sophia Hahn stated, “Auditioning is a big decision. For one, musical is a lot of work, but it is so worth the time you devote to it. No matter what part you end up getting, even the smallest roles are appreciated. So you really have nothing to lose and everything to gain!”
Senior Riley Paul added, “And you should break down your audition material and write it out which helps tremendously with memorization.”
And Mrs. Bixler shared some parting thoughts: “Musical is a commitment—as much of a commitment as any sport. We are a team, and each participant's part—large or small—contributes to a greater whole. If you can't give 100%, attend every practice, and sacrifice your free time, reconsider whether or not this is the activity for you. The other cast members—and your audience—deserve your best!”
Auditions for the musical are to be emailed to Mrs. Metelsky (metelskys@basd.k12.pa.us) by October 10. You must include a one-minute monologue and song. Dance auditions are to be submitted to Mrs. Bixler (bixlerh@basd.k12.pa.us) by October 10 and must include the provided choreographed piece.
If interested in a student choreographer position, you must choreograph a one-minute routine and perform it.
For more details on anything dance related or the routine you must have in your audition, see Mrs. Bixler.
