After a messy breakup in 2020, prom patched it up for 2021.
Despite every obstacle faced this school year, the junior class officers managed to plan and deliver another unforgettable prom for Beaver Area’s senior and junior classes at Shadow Lakes.
As always, prom started with a grand march, but instead of promenading across the auditorium stage or outdoors on the football field in front of friends and family, this year's event was live-streamed on YouTube from Shadow Lakes Country Club.
Despite some discontent among the involved parents of Facebook, students generally thought the COVID-induced change was fine.
"I thought it was unique and thought it was good that parents could [get an up-close view],” said senior Sydney Cavett about the change in tradition.
Next on the schedule was recognizing prom court and appointment of the prom king and queen, which was voted on by seniors in the weeks leading to the event. In the end, seniors Brady Hansen and Sydney Monet were crowned king and queen.
After a dinner of roast beef and chicken was a performance from hypnotist Jason Christopher, which was by all accounts an excellent performance, and not because anyone was hypnotized to say so.
"The hypnotist was wild, for real," said senior Kyriaki Maris.
Junior Josh Hill had only a vague recollection of what happened while he was in a trance.
"First I was warm, then I was driving a car, then I was smelly? Also, Wyatt [Ringer] loves me," Hill said.
Finally, everyone got to dance to their favorite songs from the last two decades, as well as get temporary tattoos and photos. However, some students didn’t much care for the DJ (which is pretty much the standard prom complaint every year).
"Listen, I’m a big Black Eyed Peas head, and I was really upset he barely played any," said junior Adam Klenovich. "Plus he didn’t play 'Sicko Mode.' He played 'Mo Bamba' but not 'Sicko Mode.' People need to understand that they’re a pair."
More simply, junior Rachel Kopicko said that the DJ, "could have been better."
With the final play of Journey's "Don’t Stop Believin" (it wouldn’t be a school dance without it) students were sent back to the school on buses at midnight to indulge in the vibrant post-prom nightlife of Beaver . . . or to return home to sleep.
Tickets for the event were $75 per student which included transportation to and from the venue, food and drink, entertainment, and prom favors.
According to junior class treasurer Elle Ray, prom couldn’t have been better.
"Prom went perfectly," Ray said.
Junior class sponsor Ms. Brittany Coleman shared the sentiment.
"It looks like it went really great. The kids seemed to really enjoy themselves and the hypnotist was great," Ms. Coleman said.
She was not able to think of anything that could have been planned better . . . although Klenovich may disagree with her on that.
