Folding paper for peace . . .
An attempt to explain how to fold an origami crane :D
Origami cranes symbolize peace and healing. This is from the legend of Sadako Sasaki, a girl who attempted to fold 1,000 paper cranes, but died of leukemia caused by radiation exposure after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Legend says that folding one thousand cranes will grant you a wish.
You’ll need a square sheet of paper . . .
- Fold the square along every line of symmetry
a. Crease (folding and unfolding) the square in half vertically;
b. Crease the square in half horizontally;
c. Crease the square in half diagonally both ways.
- Collapse the square by connecting all 4 corners.
a. Turn the square into a diamond shape (45º)
b. Starting at 12 o‘clock mental number each triangle 1-8;
c. Fold 3 onto 4; Fold 6 onto 5; Fold 1 onto 2; Fold 8 onto 7. (You should end with a smaller looking square.)
- Fold the flaps to the center line, flip and repeat.
a. Keep the center of the original square up.
b. Mental number the sides 1-4;
c. Fold side 2 to the center line (1 flap);
d. Fold side 3 to the center line;
c. Flip the square and repeat. (You should have an ice cream cone)
- Crease the top triangle, flip, and crease again.

- Unfold the flaps, take the bottom corner and fold it straight up along the previous crease of step 4, flip and repeat. (You should have a diamond.)
- Fold the right flap over the left flap, flip and repeat.
- Fold the bottom corner up, flip and repeat.

- Fold the top corner down halfway, flip and repeat. (This creates the wings of the crane.)
- Bring the right point out and pinch to set in place. Repeat for the left flap.
- Fold the tip of the right flap down a little (this is the head), fold the left flap down a lot (this is the tail).
