In recent months and years, there has been much speculation every time there is a major violent attack on whether or not it is the first event of World War III. It happened when 13 American soldiers were killed in an attack upon the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, when Russia invaded Ukraine, and when tensions escalated between Israel and Hamas.
It’s always fair to wonder about these things; I definitely don’t discredit that. Both previous World Wars were sparked by a singular event that spread like wildfire. That’s all it takes. And who’s to say that that will or will not be what causes WWIII, if it were to ever occur.
It’s almost a unanimous agreement that the state of the world and the state of our country is not at all good. I’d be one of the first to agree with that sentiment, and say that most of the world is constantly walking on eggshells trying to prevent disastrous conflicts.
Do I agree that WWIII is dangerously close to happening? Possibly. Do I actually believe it will happen? No, I really don’t.
Call it naivety or wishful thinking, but hear me out.
During the Cold War, America and the Soviet Union never came to firing missiles or guns at each other, because both nations recognized that, upon the development of the atom bomb, if they would go to war it would be mutually assured destruction.
Today is no different, if not worse. Every major country recognizes that weaponry, fire power, and militaristic power are even more lethal now than ever before. If WWIII came to be, it’s inevitable that it would cause irreparable damage to human life, agriculture, architecture, as well as the state of the world as a whole. Humans have the power to destroy themselves, and I believe that is why major nations will never allow WWIII to occur.
We may still walk on eggshells, but when have we not? I’d much rather tread lightly around a land mine than get blown to bits.
