Well folks, we have officially survived a whole year of the Biden Presidency. Barely.
President Biden was inaugurated January 20, 2021 in Washington D.C. after a rocky campaign and election. He endured a long campaign period filled with criticism, judgment, and doubt about his abilities followed by even more doubt about the legitimacy of his victory.
The President campaigned with the promise to ‘Build Back Better,’ and yet after a year in office we are still waiting for that promise to become reality. From inflation to coronavirus to Kabul, as well as a $2 trillion increase in the national debt, President Biden seems to be doing more harm than good. According to CNBC, as of January 4 the approval rating for our 46th president is at a strikingly-low 44 percent.
According to CBS, consumer prices rose approximately 7% in 2021 due to supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic. This increase was the fastest rate of inflation since 1982. To put this more into perspective, in President Trump's first year of office, the inflation rate was at 2.1%, and it was 2.7% by the end of President Obama’s first year.
Keeping on the subject of finances, when President Biden took office last January, our national debt sat at $27.8 trillion, and is at approximately $29.8 trillion after one year.
In August, President Biden withdrew U.S. troops from Afghanistan, which in turn left Afghanistan in the hands of the Taliban and finally ending the 20 year war that began because of the tragic events of 9/11. As it turns out, this war would not only start with a tragedy, but end with one as well. As U.S. troops were working to evacuate Afghan refugees and all U.S. military personnel, two suicide bombers attacked the evacuating crowds at the Kabul airport, killing at least 60 Afghans and 13 U.S. troops.
In addition, the early months of Biden’s first year were plagued by the border crisis. Thousands of undocumented immigrants flooded the southern border with very few requirements as to who can and cannot be allowed into the country. One would think that while in the midst of a global pandemic, there would be more restrictions as to who can cross the borders and why, but that simply wasn’t the case. As it turns out, there are more restrictions on travel for American citizens leaving the country than there are for illegal immigrants coming in. Sounds like backwards logic to me.
My question is: when are we going to see some positive effects of President Biden’s agenda to ‘Build Back Better’? National unity and faith in our country is at an all time low, and I firmly believe that it is because of poor leadership, not just from Biden, but from most major political leaders in our government.
I wish desperately I could quote Bon Jovi’s famous song and say that we are halfway there, but for now we will just have to settle for (hopefully) a quarter of the way there, assuming Biden avoids reelection in 2024, and judging by his approval ratings, I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how his time in office will end.
Three more years, America. May God help us all.
