Released June 4, 2001, coming from the album Room for Squares, the song expresses a desire to do what you want and do what makes you happy.

The song lists examples of times in life when you are expected to do something specific or have your mind made up about your future. But instead, doing what you want is shown to be more important.

The Cry’s “Alone”:

Released in 1990, and from the album Beautiful Reasons, the song is notably recognized from 90’s skating videos.

This song explores the idea of being alone and not knowing if being alone is quite enough.

The Smith’s “I Don’t Owe You Anything”:

Released February 20, 1984, and from the debut album The Smiths, the song communicates the theme of breaking free from being held by others and doing to what one really wants in their life.

Saint Etienne’s “Spring”:

Released October 14, 1991, and belonging to the album Foxbase Alpha, the song expresses the feeling of loss of hope in love after getting out of a relationship—but not giving up because there is still the future.
