Cheering in the library? Students being mysteriously pulled out of class? No worries, it’s just National Honor Society induction season.
Continuing their yearly tradition, new NHS inductees were joined by returning members for a celebratory breakfast.
National Honor Society, also known as NHS, is a national organization for high school students that aims to recognize student achievement. The Beaver Area NHS chapter is selective; students students must meet the prerequisite set for application to the society.
After an in-depth and difficult selection process that considers aspects of a student’s academics, service, leadership, and character, 30 juniors and seniors were accepted into the organization.
In order to honor the new inductees, NHS sponsor Mrs. Erin Bechdel and president senior Elle Taylor organized a breakfast meeting for all members October 20.
Acceptance was kept a secret from the students who applied this year, following a mishap last year that involved passes to the library being passed out a day too early.
The morning of the 20th, inductees were invited to the library without reason. Upon arrival, the inductees were officially “pinned”. Being pinned represents acceptance into the Society through a gold NHS pin that each member wears on induction night and at graduation.
This year, current members cheered on the newest inductees as they were invited to the library and were then tasked with pinning the gold token to the new members’ shirts.
“The breakfast was a big success! Students really enjoyed the ceremony and the treats,” said Mrs. Bechdel.
The morning was a time for excitement as inductees were greeted by friends and celebrated for their contributions to both the school and wider community. There was a large selection of treats and pastries available for every student to enjoy.
Senior Lauren Nesbella, one of the inductees this year, said about the breakfast, “It was a really exciting morning for everybody! I thought pinning was a nice celebration.”
The official induction ceremony doesn’t take place until November 14 in the auditorium, so be sure to report at 7 p.m. to support your friends!
