The track team has certainly had a good month—a month so good that some on the team are now referring to themselves as "galactic champs."
So far, the boys have had a smooth path to the top of the section. First, they beat Avonworth and Quaker Valley April 14 before heading to Riverside for the Beaver County Championships April 17, where they finished second overall. They also annihilated Blackhawk on their home turf April 20.
As for the girls, they won against Avonworth but lost to Quaker Valley, came in third at the Championship, and also annihilated Blackhawk. Unfortunately, none on the girls team seem to want to claim themselves as galactic champs . . . yet.
The team also attended a massive invitational in Butler April 24-25 where some members of the team claimed some impressive finishes, including a third place in the 400m dash from senior Brody Leichliter and a ninth place high jump from senior Eden McElhaney.
Junior Krystof Purtell says that the team has exceeded his expectations for this season.
"Just wait for playoffs, baby; that’s all I’ve got to say," Purtell proclaimed.
While one wonders what the "galactic champs" would have to gain at a regional sports competition, Purtell had a very simple explanation.
"WPIAL supersedes the universe."
But can Beaver Area supersede the WPIAL? Check the ECHO for our senior issue May 28 to find out!
