The Bobcats’ historical run has come to an end.
The soccer team’s magical run continued October 31 when they shocked the defending WPIAL and PIAA champions in a penalty kick shootout by a score of 0-0 (5-4 on penalty kicks). The game ended the same way that it ended against Shady Side, with Luke Tomalski making the go-ahead penalty kick followed by the game-winning save by Robert Cestra.
“I’m really proud of our team. I knew we could go very far,” said Cestra.
The Bobcats next task was November 3 against Deer Lakes for the WPIAL Championship at Highmark Stadium, home of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
The day began with a school-wide pep assembly followed by student busses and a tailgate outside the stadium before the game. Unfortunately the Bobcats fell short 1-0 in overtime.
It was a tough loss, but the Bobcats weren’t done yet—they still had another game because making it to the finals automatically qualified them for the PIAA state tournament.
Next up for the Bobcats was Bedford High School in the first round of the PIAA tournament November 8, and it would be played at Windbur Stadium.
Sadly, this game would mark the end of the Bobcats’ historical season as they would lose a tough game 5-0.
The Bobcats finished the season with a 11-6 record including a 10-2 record in section play followed by three wins in the playoffs and two losses. The Bobcats became the second team in school history to make it to the WPIAL Championship. The last time they made it that far was in 2006.
In addition to their historic season they also had three players make the class 2A all WPIAL team. Seniors Caden Biela and Jameson Bonnar as well as junior Kyle Carlsen were named to the team.
Head coach Scott Hazuda was also named WPIAL class 2A coach of the year.
“I’m really proud of the boys and what were able to accomplish this year; we did something that only one other team in school history was able to do,” said Coach Hazuda.
