Thanksgiving is quickly approaching—and so are my music recommendations.

Here are some songs that will hopefully get you in the mood for the festive day:

Shawn Colvin’s “Sunny Came Home”: Coming from the 1996 album A Few Small Repairs, this song focuses on a woman, named Sunny, who wants liberation, so to get away from her past she burns down her house. Now this is a great song, just make sure you don’t burn your house down this Thanksgiving.

The Sundays’ “I Won”: Originally released as a single in 1989, but later released again on the album Reading, Writing and Arithmetic January 15, 1990, this song is about the struggle to express one’s flaws or insecurities in front of others, claiming they are better than others and have won. This song definitely relates to that one person you may have at the dinner table who boasts about events that never took place.

Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn”: First released as a single but later quickly released with the album Left of the Middle in 1997, this song focuses around realizing that the person she thought was perfect for her was not the whole time. This song relates to those who may be going into Thanksgiving without the person you thought you would be with.

The Cocteau Twins’ “Sugar Hiccup”: This title was released on the album Head Over Heels back in 1983. This song focuses around the feelings of sweetness and love—which can feel fitting if you are visiting loved ones this Thanksgiving.

The 10,000 Maniacs’ “These Are Days”: This song was released as a single in 1992. This song perfectly captures the essence of cherishing the present and finding greatness in life. It’s also a great song for those of you who are extremely looking forward to Thanksgiving this year.

Nico’s “These Days”: This tune was released in 1967 (six-seven?) as a part of the album Chelsea Girl. The song focuses around looking back on mistakes, loss, and regret. It’s a fitting song for those who maybe haven’t had the best year and want some time to reflect.

Vince Guaraldi’s “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”: Surprisingly this song wasn’t officially released until 2023. Prior to that it only could be listened to while watching the 1973 television special. But many find this tune nostalgic and comforting around Thanksgiving as it gives us a glimpse of what the past was like and what we are like now.

Paula Cole’s “I Don’t Want to Wait”: This song was released as a single on the album This Fire in 1997. It is written about the fear of repeating mistakes family members made in the past while wanting to live life fully in remembrance of her grandfather. This song might be relatable to those going into Thanksgiving this year without a loved one and with the feeling of fear and uncertainty.

The Chicks’ “Landslide”: This title was released in 2002. This song was a single from the album Home. This song is a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” and is perfect for anytime around Thanksgiving as it evokes a warm and welcoming feeling.
