Beaver Area High School girls may have tackled the competition, but they didn’t tackle each other.
November 12 was the annual Powderpuff game which gives high school girls the opportunity to play flag football and represent their grade all while fundraising some money.
The freshman, sophomore, and junior teams were all fighting to take down the class of 2023 who were last year’s champions. Despite that, the seniors were hungry and looking for a second-year win.
Weeks prior to the event plenty of advertising was done because Powderpuff is a fundraiser whose proceeds benefit this year’s prom. Tickets were $5 for adults and $2 for students.
Powderpuff was planned by junior class president Olivia St. Esprit and the junior class officers.
“I had a really great time planning the Powderpuff game this year! It was stressful at times, but the end result was amazing and I was so happy to see so many people supporting the class office!” St. Esprit said.
In the end the advertising worked students came out as players, coaches, or cheerleaders.
Many students were excited to participate in the game for the first time, too.
Freshman Lyra Kuhlmann played for the first time this year and said, “I wanted to do Powderpuff to have fun with my friends and learn more about football so I know what's happening on Friday nights.”
Since this was a competition, practice was a necessity to teams’ success. However, practice wasn’t mandatory, but the more the players knew about the plays and how each other play, the better off the team would be.
Senior Kat Eck said that the seniors, “practiced routes and ran through plays, went over defensive positions and where to be [on the field] and how to judge zones.”
At practice the student coaches would direct their teams and give them the best advice to guide them toward success.
One of the coaches, junior Aiden Rhodes said, “The juniors are the dream team.”
When it came to game day, the first round was the freshmen versus the seniors while the sophomores took on the juniors. The winners of these games would face each other in the championship.
The seniors smashed the freshman 21-0. The seniors were going to the championship for the second year in a row.
Meanwhile, the sophomores defeated the juniors 28-14.
The championship game would feature the seniors and sophomores.
After a hard game the seniors continued their streak by winning the championship for a second year in a row. The seniors won 14-0.
By the end of the night the goal of raising funds—$882 in total—was successful and everyone had a great time even in the freezing weather!
Junior class officer Cannon Hoback said, “Although the weather stunk, we all made the best out of it and ended up having a great night!”
