While many events this year have been canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Beaver Area High School’s annual CHK event will prevail once again.
CHK (which stands for Christmahanakwanzika) has been a staple of the winter season at Beaver High School for the past decade, and this year will mark the 11th consecutive CHK event.
In years past, CHK was a symbolic event that brought high school students together the day before winter break. CHK usually consists of two halves: the morning talent show and the afternoon “Reindeer Games” which is an array of competitions among the high school grade levels: grades are awarded points for each competition they win, and the grade which wins the most points wins CHK.
While Beaver Area will be holding its annual CHK event, courtesy of Student Council and its sponsor Mrs. Susan Metelsky, the event will undergo significant pandemic-related alterations.
For starters, the talent show isn’t happening as there will be no physical or digital gathering of high school students like years past. However, students will still compete to earn points for their respective grades, and the grade with the most points will win this year's CHK.
No, there won’t be dodgeball or tug-of-war or musical Santa hats or the letter jumble, but that doesn’t mean students won’t be competing and having fun.
Information regarding the various competitions will be shared via the newly created Beaver Area Student Council Instagram account.
Competitions have already begun for this year's CHK, and the current competition consists of whichever grade donates the most gifts for TLC Present Drive. Be sure to check the Student Council Instagram page for changes, future updates, and information on other events.
2020 has been a difficult year for many students, and hopefully CHK will once again be an event of bringing students and staff together. Long live CHK—in any form!
